As a dietary supplement, melatonin is not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for safety, effectiveness or labeling before it is sold to the public. The council’s action follows recent reports of a massive rise in accidental ingestions of melatonin by children and an April 2023 study that found 25 products labeled as melatonin gummies contained dangerous levels of the hormone. Melatonin gummies were involved in nearly 5,000 of those cases. While the vast majority of unsupervised melatonin ingestions did not result in hospitalization, the number of accidental ingestions by children 5 and under may be underestimated, the report said. New and improved labelsThe council guidelines call for new labels that warn consumers about the danger of drowsiness after taking a melatonin supplement.

GM's new guidance reduced expected net income attributable to stockholders for 2023 to a range of $9.1 billion to $9.7 billion, compared to the previous outlook of $9.3 billion to $10.7 billion. That includes an estimated $1.1 billion EBIT-adjusted impact from the UAW strike, which lasted just over six weeks, primarily from lost production. GM had approximately 1.37 billion shares of common stock outstanding prior to the buyback program, the company said. GM will still have another $1.4 billion of capacity remaining under its share repurchase authorization for additional stock buybacks.

Regulators in Britain on Thursday approved the first treatment derived from CRISPR, the revolutionary gene-editing method. Called Casgevy, the treatment is intended to cure sickle-cell disease and a related condition, beta thalassemia. The companies anticipate that the Food and Drug Administration will approve Casgevy for sickle-cell patients in the United States in early December. The agency will decide on approval for beta thalassemia next year. That treatment does not rely on gene editing, insteading using a method that inserts new DNA into the genome.

The move comes after Cruise, the driverless car unit of General Motors, suspended all operations nationwide after California regulators ordered the robotaxi operator to remove its driverless cars from state roads. California regulators suspended the company's license to operate driverless vehicles last month, saying self-driving vehicles were a risk to the public.

Nonfarm payrolls increased by 150,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said in its closely watched employment report on Friday. The economy needs to create roughly 100,000 jobs per month to keep up with growth in the working-age population. The report could strengthen financial market expectations that the Federal Reserve is done raising interest rates for the current cycle. The labor market is the major force behind the economy's staying power, with gross domestic product recording an annualized growth pace of nearly 5% in the third quarter. But others disagreed, saying that the record-setting contracts would only become an issue for wage inflation if the Fed raised rates too high and choked off demand.
